TELEVISION Section 4 Page 6 I Fort Worth Star-Telegram Tuesday Alt August 2Z 1989 Two specials will look at US race relations Art Chapman Television first broadcast honored in the new category Outstanding Achievement in Casting for a Mini-Series or Special created this year as an "area" Emmy (voted on by a committee of peers) Casting executive Lynn Kressel will receive the award in a non-televised ceremony Lonesome Dove won 18 Emmy nominations more than any other program this year Elvis is alive and he's on a daytime soap Actor Todd McDurmont who plays Todd Jones on ABCs Loving isn't actually Elvis but on today's installment of the daytime soap McDtumont becomes an Elvis impersonator McDurmont has actually been doing this sort of thing for a long time He began impersonating Elvis in high school Today he takes his act to the opening of TJ's the hottest spot in town on Loving Race relations is the central topic of thd network nem divisions for the next coOple of weeks ABC News is offering Black in a White America next week NBC News begins a two-part live special on the subject the following week The two programs share the questions of racial prejudices in this country but each takes a unique approach to answering those questions Black in a Mite America will air at 9 pm Aug 29 then will continue on a special edition of Nighdine anchored by Ted Koppel The hourlong special will be reported by ABC News senior correspondent and World News Saturday anchor Carole Simpson ABC News medical correspondent George Strait and ABC News correspondent Charles Thomas All three reporters are black as are all the program producers -Simpson will report on the people who have made the greatest strides since the civil rights movement Thomas explores the life of underclass underprivileged blacks who eke out a daily existence in one of Chicago's most dangerous housing projects Strait looks at the history of the Tuskegee Airmen a group of black men who fought as a unit in World War The program will end with the personal reflections of the three correspondents regarding their experiences in making the special and their experiences as black Americans on Sept 5 and 6 NBC will present The RACE anchored by Today host Bryant Gumbel The title stands for Racial Attitudes and Consciousness Exam and the test will be given live to the viewing audience Over two nights viewer opinions on a variety of interracial relationships will be tested and the viewers can then measure their answers against national research data NBC says the program is intended to focus attention on the state of race relations in the United States and the extent to which Americans are aware of their feelings or their willingness to change Live audiences in New York Los Angeles Milwaukee and Jackson Miss will provide immediate feedback to the program through a new interactive response system called Quick Tally With a device like a TV remote the members will register their answers to the questions electronically and within seconds the results will appear on the TV screen in the form of charts and graphs n- Lonesome Dove has already won its first Emmy The CBS mini-series is the The adventures of English navigator and explorer James Cook will be played out in TNT's newest venture a six-hour mini-series called what else Captain Cook The story will air three consecutive nights in October and will star Enunywinning star Keith Mitchell Mitchell starred in The Six Wives ofHenry VHI Seven Seas to Calais The Day Christ Died and The Story Cook commissioned three voyages to the
