Powerball is a multi-state draw game played by millions of people in the US. With a jackpot worth hundreds of millions of dollars, it’s no surprise that Powerball is among the most popular games in the New York Lottery. If you’re interested in learning how NY Powerball works and the prizes and winnings odds, read on for more information.

How to Play New York Powerball

Even if you have zero experience with Powerball, the rules are simple to understand and follow. Here’s everything you need to do to participate in the NY Powerball draw:

  1. Find the nearest NY Lottery retailer and purchase a Powerball ticket.
  2. You can either choose the ‘Quick Pick’ option or select your numbers. Quick Pick is the easiest way to play the game — the computer randomly chooses the numbers instead of you.
  3. If you’d rather select your own numbers, grab the payslip, pick five white-ball numbers from 1 to 69, and one red Powerball from 1 to 26.
  4. Complete the game panel, choosing how many plays you want to participate in with the same payslip.
  5. Give the completed payslip back to the retailer or place it in the New York Lottery vending machine to receive the ticket.
  6. Follow the drawings on TV or visit the official NY Lottery website to see the winning numbers.

While you’re filling out the payslip, you can choose a few options:

  • Powerplay — pay $1 extra per game and choose to boost any non-jackpot winnings by a factor of two, three, four, five, or ten;
  • Play It Again — come back within 30 days from the draw with the same ticket and play the same numbers again;
  • Multi-Draw — choose to participate in the following 39 Powerball drawings.

Up until recently, New York didn’t allow its residents to purchase lottery tickets online. However, in January 2021, the State Lottery entered into an agreement with the mobile app Jackpocket, making it possible for players to buy Powerball tickets online and participate in the draw.

Players older than 18 can download the iOS or Android app, install it on their mobile devices, and buy Powerball tickets. After getting the payslip and submitting the order, the app completes the order and scans it, sending you a confirmation email with the ticket’s serial number.

Afterwards, you can follow the draw and see the winning Powerball numbers on the official NY Lottery website.

Powerball Drawing Schedule

The NY Lottery holds Powerball draws three times a week. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59pm ET, participants have a chance to win the multi-million-dollar jackpot. If you decide to participate in Powerball, you can buy the ticket until 10pm ET on the draw night.

Payouts, Odds, and Rules

As mentioned, Powerball rules are super simple to follow. Choose five white numbers from 1 to 69 and the red Powerball from 1 to 26.

To win the current jackpot, you need to guess the entire combination — five white ball numbers and the red Powerball. The main prize continues to grow between draws until someone hits the jackpot.

If you guess only the five white numbers, you’ll get a second-place reward worth $1 million. The seven other prizes range between $50,000 and $4, depending on the combination you guess correctly.

Below, you can find more details about the winning combinations, odds, and prizes.

How to Claim New York Powerball Prizes

NY Lottery winners can collect their prizes in one of several ways:

  • Rewards up to $600 can be collected at any NY Lottery retailer. Alternatively, you can set an appointment at any Lottery Customer Service Center or mail it to the Lottery;
  • If you choose to go to a retailer, you’ll only need the winning ticket;
  • For an appointment, you’ll need the ticket, a valid government-issued ID, and a Claim Form;
  • If you have won $601 or more, you can schedule an appointment at the Lottery Customer Service Center, go to the local Prize Claim center, or mail the ticket to the NY Lottery;
  • You need a valid ID, winning ticket, filled out Claim Form, and a Social Security Number or FEIN to claim the prize;
  • However, if your reward is over $50,000, you’ll have to wait a couple of days before you can collect it.

New York Powerball Biggest Winners

Some players have been lucky and managed to hit the Powerball jackpot. Although it seems impossible to achieve, the following people have proved us wrong:

  • In October 2018, Manhattan-based Robert Bailey came forward as the winner of NY’s largest lottery win in history. The jackpot worth $687.8 million was split in two as an Iowa woman played the same numbers. Bailey won $343.8 million thanks to the same six numbers he’s been playing for 25 years.
  • In January 2019, David Johnson of East New York went home with $298.3 million by hitting the Powerball jackpot.
  • August 17, 2019, was a lucky day for a Merrick woman who won $150 million by guessing all six winning numbers.
  • Most recently, in September 2020, a man from Malta hit the Powerball jackpot of $94.8 million and became the latest NY Lottery multi-millionaire.

Powerball History and Facts

  • The New York Lottery began selling Powerball tickets on January 31, 2010;

  • The New York Constitution requires that all proceeds from lottery games, including Powerball, go towards the support of schools.

The New York Lottery hosts a rich selection of exciting games you can participate in. Aside from Powerball, NY residents have access to Mega Millions, Lotto, Cash4Life, Pick 10, Take 5, Win 4, Numbers, and others.

New York Powerball FAQ

How do you win the Powerball?

Powerball rules are simple. To win the jackpot, you need to match all five white-ball numbers between 1 and 69 and guess the red Powerball, any number from 1 to 26. If you fail to match the Powerball but get the five white balls right, you’ll get a $1 million prize. Don’t worry, though — Powerball features seven other prizes.

To boost your non-jackpot winnings, you can always opt for the Power Play feature and potentially increase your reward two, three, four, five, or ten times.

When is the Powerball draw?

The New York Lottery organizes Powerball draws three times a week — on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. The drawing events happen at 10:59pm ET.

How late can you buy New York Powerball tickets?

Those who want to participate in the NY Powerball can purchase the ticket as late as 10pm ET on the night of the draw, approximately one hour before the drawing event starts.

How much tax do you pay on NY Powerball winnings?

Like any other state lotteries, the NY Lottery is required by law to withhold 24% of the winning for federal taxes. On top of that, 8.82% of the winnings go to state income taxes.
